Head Start

It is believed humans first communicated through the use of song and gesture. When we combine music and sign language to support language and literacy skills, learning is enhanced exponentially. Research conclusively demonstrates that song, dance/movement and sign language enhance and can accelerate early brain development.

At the end of this highly interactive workshop, participants will have learned:
  • How early language development forms the foundation for literacy
  • How phonemic awareness, rhyming and repetition are essential tools for literacy
  • How music, dance/movement and sign language enhance attention, information processing, motivation, communication skills and self-esteem
  • How a multi-modality approach to learning supports creativity and brain connections
  • How a healthy, loving, interactive relationship is the cornerstone for acquiring rich, diverse language and the joy of learning

The following letter is to document the presentation by Linda Stoler of a three-part training series in language development and literacy for early childhood education teachers in a Head Start program.

Through sign language, movement, and song, Linda introduced the concepts of the phonological awareness continuum, sound production, rhyming, and language development. Linda provided hand-outs that included the words to songs that were introduced over the course of the workshop, as well as "extension activities" designed to support the teachers in the ongoing implementation of the activities and skills acquired in the training series.

Three times per year, our program conducts individual assessments for the children to track progress in several developmental areas. This data is collected and compiled on a program wide basis. This year, we have seen about a 25% increase in the area of language development and phonological awareness over last year's assessment results. We have come to the conclusion that our focus on improving the teachers' instructional practices in these areas have had a direct impact on the developmental skills of the children.

Linda is a truly gifted and talented educator and has an incredible wealth of experience and creativity in the field of speech and language development. She is an inspiration to those of us fortunate enough to work with her.
